If you think that the game would handle differently using a controller, then it is certainly your prerogative to ignore my advice. I admit that I've never tried remapping the mouse to a controller for this game but, then again, I've played this game.
The only controller that I can see being well suited for this game is the upcoming Steambox controller, but again that simply uses trackpads. I've used a wireless mouse to play this while I sat on a couch in front of my TV. If you're using the controller solely as a mouse.why not use a mouse. I guarantee that if HBS added the option to use gamepads as a replacement for a mouse that there would be an inundation of complaints that it wasn't "REAL" gamepad support. It's not my fault others infer that that means that "it's not a modern game" or "the devs just don't want to give the people what they want". I just said that the game is not really designed in a way that makes a controller an adequate compromise. What doesn't make sense for you may be perfect for someone else.And noone here is faulting them for simply asking the question.

Then either a face button or trigger for the mouse click, and you're good to go. I've done it on many games quite successfully. Of course using the d-pad to control the mouse sounds ridiculous, why wouldn't you use one of the controllers joysticks? Most people these days are gaming with xbox controllers or similar. I can't speak for all the programs, but joy2key works for mouse and keyboard. (I guess technically you could move the mouse cursor with the d-pad and devote a button to a mouse click, but.WHY?!?) Using a controller really makes no sense for this game. The interface is simplified to be entirely mouse controlled: where you want your characters to move, what skills to use, dialogue options.
The issue is not laziness (as far as just not adding the necessary libraries to use a controller), the game's control scheme is not designed to use a keyboard at all.
